free worm wee!

last week we fed scraps to the worms, and now it looks like its mostly gone. Earlier in the week there were ants picking at some of the food. I added water and cut away some of the climbing plants which had overgrown there, touching the top of the wormie house. Now it looks like the ants have vacated, and on inspection the worms are now feeding happily. The biggest surprise was how much wee the worms have produced in only a couple of weeks. Indeed my garden does not require so much nourishment as these little fellas are going to produce! Want some?

In the rest of the garden, a spider has been making increasingly large webs between a small potted frangipani and the blueberry ash. Its a leaf curler, and all I see is the front two legs poking out from a tightly wrapped leaf in the centre of its web.

The Introduction to Permaculture course last weekend included a visit to a community garden on Angel St in Newtown. From a dry concrete block 12 years ago, its been transformed into a rich, diverse environment. Passionfruit decorates the exterior fence , and inside everything from sweet potatoes to abandoned ornamentals grow. I came away with a bag full of seeds and cuttings, and a promise to return to do a bit of honest gardening. A nearby previously disused laneway has similarly been tended, and is now transformed into a lovely public space where neighbours can hang out and enjoy each other in the company of lush borders. Not a bad way to live!
